Private or Group Family Constellations in NYC: Which Format Fits the Question?

Both formats work with systems and relationships. The difference is how the work is held, who is present, and what kind of container the question needs.

PhiLuminous™ Journal · October 2026 · New York City practice

People often ask whether a private constellation is less powerful than a group constellation, or whether a group is automatically deeper because representatives are involved. That is not a useful way to choose.

The better question is simpler: what kind of setting best supports the question you are bringing?

Private constellations offer focus and discretion.

In a private session, the relevant people, roles, places, decisions, or other elements are represented with figures, markers, objects, or spatial positions. The room stays focused on one client and one system.

This can be especially useful when the material is intimate, when business information is confidential, when someone prefers one-to-one work, or when the client wants a quieter pace with more time to observe each movement.

A private format may fit when:

  • You prefer discretion and one-to-one attention.
  • The question involves sensitive relationship or family material.
  • The issue is organizational, financial, or business-related.
  • You want to pause, reflect, and test positions without a group present.
  • You are new to constellation work and want a more contained introduction.

Group constellations create a wider relational field.

In a group setting, one participant brings a constellation while other people may serve as representatives or observers. The experience can create movement that is different from working only with objects or markers.

The group also allows participants to encounter themes beyond their own story. A representative may recognize something personally meaningful while still respecting that the constellation belongs to another person's system.

A group format may fit when:

  • You are comfortable working in a shared setting.
  • You want to experience representative work directly.
  • The question may benefit from live relational movement.
  • You are interested in participating both as a client and as part of a wider learning field.
  • You value witnessing other systemic processes as part of the experience.
The format is not the work. The format is the container that helps the work become visible.

What stays the same in both formats?

The work begins with a present question. We identify the minimum system needed to explore it clearly. We observe relationships, positions, distance, orientation, inclusion, role, responsibility, and movement.

What appears is treated as material for exploration, not as proof of hidden historical facts. The aim is greater perspective, clearer position, and a more usable next step.

What if you are not sure which format to choose?

You do not need to decide before making contact. A short inquiry can clarify whether the current question is better suited to private work, group work, or another PhiLuminous service.

New York City

PhiLuminous offers private and limited-size group constellation work in New York City by inquiry. Current dates, venue details, format, and fees are confirmed before booking.

A simple way to decide.

Choose private work when focus, discretion, or confidentiality matter most. Consider group work when live representation and shared process are part of what you want to experience.

Neither format needs to be more dramatic. The right one is the one that gives the real question enough space to become visible.

Start with the question, not the format.

Explore the main Constellations page or send a private inquiry and we can determine the most appropriate starting point.
